National Honor Society
If you are a good student and are concerned about your educational future, you will probably be interested in NHS. Even though you are not eligible for a membership until your junior year, you need to be aware now of the requirements for membership, so that you can begin to work to earn the honor of membership.
Members are selected by a faculty committee. You must first maintain at least a 3.5 grade point average and then submit an application for admission which shows that you have also met high standards of service, leadership, and community activities. Without these activities and positions, you are not eligible for membership even though you may have very high grades.
Because you are also rated by all of your high school teachers, it is important that you make a positive impression on your teachers from the first day you arrive at the high school. If you are selected for membership by the faculty committee, you are inducted at a special ceremony followed by a reception and banquet for your parents. Once you are inducted, you must then complete 10 hours of community service to earn a pin and permanent membership.
So, if you have drive, determination, community service, and the high grades it takes to be a member of NHS, membership will be a rewarding opportunity. Acceptance into colleges will be easier, and colleges will also consider you for academic scholarships. Open to juniors and seniors with a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

Relay for Life Fundraiser
This year we kicked off our service marathon with our second year of the Cupcakes for a Cure fundraiser for Relay for Life. It began last year as a mission to sell 1,000 cupcakes to earn $1,000, but it became an even sweeter success with a final raised total of about $3,300. We decided to keep the sweetness going by bringing this fundraiser back to the school, and so every Friday, students can help fight cancer by buying a cupcake, beating the awful disease $1 at a time. All the funds we raised this year from these curing cupcakes, a total of $4,905, will go toward our donation to the American Cancer Society for Relay for Life.
Love was definitely in the air, along with some embarrassment, for our next fundraiser. As Valentine’s Day approached, NHS decided to sell Gorilla Grams to benefit Relay for Life. For $5, students could send their friends or loved ones a candy bar, sweet heart candies, and a message. But the best part: all of this was delivered by a mystery student in a gorilla suit, and captured on camera to be broadcast to the school. Needless to say, high school students and faculty practically went bananas, spreading lots of monkey love around Central Cambria. NHS felt the love by adding the raised $225 to our Relay donation.
Another big fundraiser for Relay that kept us busy this year was our 3rd annual Student-vs-Faculty “Ballin’ for a Cure” Basketball Game. NHS helped out at this fun-filled event that featured some tough competition between teachers and students, a basket raffle, accessories so fans could “Go Purple” for Relay for Life, face-painting, and more. With the help of the community’s generosity and our school’s assistance, we were able to raise over $2,500 for our Relay efforts.
Our biggest fundraiser for our Relay for Life efforts is our annual Relay Day. We spent the last month working hard instead of winding down. NHS students planned, prepped, and pulled out all stops to provide Central Cambria with an exciting Relay Day at school. From DJ’s and movies, to a volleyball tournament and a talent show, NHS made sure that students enjoyed themselves. All the while, these students were funding the cure for cancer, and everyone involved should be proud of their efforts. This year, all of our fundraisers for the American Cancer Society generated around $21,000.
